What’s Holding You Back?
TAKE 2 minutes FOR TRAINING
Just before Christmas I had the privilege of meeting with a friend of mine that I hadn’t seen in about 30 years, and she’s a special friend because when I was wrestling with that decision of whether I would follow Jesus or not, she said to me, “You know Donna, you believe in Jesus, but you’ve never given him 100 percent of your life. Why don’t you try surrendering your life to Jesus and following Him for three weeks and see what happens?”
Well, it changed my life—it changed everything!
But then I was thinking about the role of surrender throughout our whole Christian life. So whether we haven’t come to faith yet, then we have to come to this new level of surrendering our life—taking that risk, that step of faith and follow Jesus. He said come follow me.
And then there’s different times that you come in your faith journey where you have to come to new levels of surrender, where the Lord reminds us that we are not God and that He is actually the Lord and has the right to lead our life. That’s what we give over to him. He has the right because of who He is but also because we surrender to Him, and it really is a biblical encouragement and command to keep surrendering our life.
And I was reminded of that when I was reading in Luke chapter 9, starting at verse 23. “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.”
That’s really surrendering. Not trying to save our life, but being willing to give our life away for His sake.
So I don’t know where you are in your spiritual journey, whether it’s even before you have come to the Lord? Maybe you’re exploring? Maybe you have been a follower of Jesus but you’re wrestling in your will, or maybe you’ve followed Him for a long time.
May you allow Him to keep bringing you to new levels of surrender and I would just encourage you to ponder this question. If someone were to ask you, “What’s holding you back?”, what would you say?
